All our programs require full gear. Players at minimum must own their own hockey skates.
We do have some loaner gear to get you into your first game quicker. It is used (very!) and limited in supply. Reach out if you require gear
Below is a list of the gear you’ll need to play:
- Skates
- Helmet with cage or visor
- Neck guard
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads
- Hockey pants
- Jock or Jill
- Shin/ knee pads
- Hockey socks
- Gloves
- Stick
- Water Bottle
Our home rink at Ice Zoo has a hockey shop built in. Check out SkatePlus to get started.
There are a couple of other great options around the Sydney area for gear including Skaters Network, Ice Monster. Facebook marketplace often has some good second hand options.
Absolutely. In line with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rules, all players must wear a visor at a minimum, and female players are required to wear full face coverage.
We recommend a full cage or bubble/fishbowl, particularly to Freshmen in their first year of playing. Keep your teeth, jaw and nose looking pretty!
It’s confusing I know!
Freshmen is our entry level league – think ‘college freshman’. It’s designed as your first year (or more – you’re welcome to stay) in the world of Ice Hockey.
Beerginners is more of your typical beerleague style comp, suitable for strong IHNSW Div 4 players+
If you’re new to the sport, Freshmen is the program for you! All you need is a good attitude. Most of our players have joined Freshmen completely new to the sport. The coaches, the league, and your fellow Freshmen are all very welcoming to players of any skill level.
Following Freshmen, you can get yourself into some faster action with Beerginners. To keep the level appropriate, we welcome Beerginners players with a solid foundation of ice hockey. Generally this ranges from competitive IHNSW Division 4 players up to Division 2 players. We find Freshmen with around 2 years of game experience (depending on rate of development) are suited for this more competitive environment.
Absolutely get that practice in! It is not mandatory to join training to play with TDH, but always thoroughly encouraged to help you develop your skills.
Our trainings are open and run on a drop in basis – just pay at the door. Full gear (including neck guard) required.
If you’re brand new to training and thinking about joining Freshmen, reach out by Facebook or Instagram and we can arrange a friendly face to buddy up and to help navigate the varying skill at our trainings (which can range from brand new to Australian representative level!)
Sometimes there are just things that come up and get in the way – sickness, holidays and general life stuff. If you’re going to miss a week here or there, then you’re just gonna have to shed a tear, crack a beer, and wait until you can get back at it.
If you have an injury – firstly ouch! Secondly, you can’t hockey. We want everyone to enjoy their hockey experience! If your injury will have a significant impact on the remainder of your season, have a discussion with the league coordinator at your earliest opportunity and they will be happy to work something out.
An ice hockey scrimmage (aka scrim) is a casual, informal game session where players practice skills, get ice time, and play for fun.
All our open scrims are drop-in and non-checking, and self directed – we hope teams match skill ability and self police rules and offsides. Open to ages 16+ (unless exemption provided).
If you’re joining a scrim please bring both a white and dark jersey with you.
We have a very strict “No Jerks” policy.
Triple Deke Hockey is a fun and friendly co-ed hockey league for grown-ups. In our leagues, trainings, scrims and all other programming we expect our participants to be respectful of their fellow teammates, officials, rink staff, and just pretty much everyone in their lives in general.
Usually we’re pretty good at attracting the right type of people, but sometimes a bad apple makes its way into the bunch. To the best of our ability they’re politely asked to go elsewhere before they’re able to spoil things for everyone else.
We follow the rules set out by the IIHF, as amended from time to time. You can peruse a copy on the IIHF website.
Freshmen also implements a ‘no player left behind’ pub rule. Please talk to your captain if you are unsure of the rule.
Any game enquiries must be made to (or via) a players team captain or alternate captain. For players, the team captain is the first person to approach with a game related enquiry.
More serious complaints of harassment or abuse or non-game / play related grievances should initially be directed to a Triple Deke Hockey league coordinator, who may then report to the Triple Deke Hockey directors. We have a Zero Tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination and take complaints seriously.
Triple Deke Hockey is keen to assist members to get the best out of their participation in the sport of Ice Hockey!
